A GOOD HOME AND NEW CAREER FOR EACH GOOD HORSE!

TAKE A LOOK AND SEE THE HAPPY OUTCOME!

MAJOR Horse #00012 STATUS: ARRIVED IN LISTINGS, March, 2008 ADOPTED! GONE TO MALIBU!

Can you say 'good ol' boy?' There, I knew you could. Big. Deceptively laid back. Major is a former race horse turned babysitter in his retirement from the track. Thoroughbred, gelded, 17 hands! A big puppy dog, your ninety year old Aunt Floe could probably ride him. His most recent jobs have included being babysitter to one of Secretariat's descendants. Now, he needs a new gig. A change in direction at his former farm has made him an extra without a part. So....

He has some quirks. Like being very mellow. He is a little arthritic, he IS 13+ ya' know, and his condition requires that he be given plenty of exercise opportunity. In other words, he needs some pasture space once in a while. Riding work is not a problem, although some 'horsey Advil' as we call it here, is required before hand.

Major relaxes on the farm where he was rehabilitated after rescue.

UPDATE: May 30th, 2008 8:00PM MAJOR LEFT FOR MALIBU, CALIFORNIA, adopted by Cynthia M.!

Mr. Chris fits Major with his new personalized halter!

Here Terry Konkle of Light Star makes Major at home for his trip to California! These guys traveled better then most people!

BUCKLAND'S FAERIE QUEEN -Horse #00008 STATUS: ADOPTED!

Faerie, as we call her, was bought in a Dutch auction with two other yearlings on Oct. 1st, 2007. One came to BERI, the other went to another farm nearby. The physical condition of these three youngsters was appalling. Open cuts and lesions, Strep infected, severely malnourished and underweight, her survival was a miracle. She is a double-registered Kentucky Mountain Horse, and her grandfather is the legendary "Goldfinger". The three were part of a larger herd brought into the Paris auction. The long drought in Kentucky had taken its toll, and Faerie was in bad shape. We brought her home, quarantined her from the Buckland herd, and fed her in the slow pattern needed to bring a starving horse back to health. The rescue included a 10 day tour of injections of Penicillin-G for strep/shipping fever. Her affect shifted alternately from utter despair to sheer panic and terror. With a lot of work, however, she has responded very well, and has since filled out into quite a refined young filly. Extremely intelligent, and very friendly, she was seen 'kissing' on a cameraman during a recent television story filmed here at The Buckland. Her color is technically termed 'a pink carmello', however Miss Buffy refers to her as the 'pink palomino'. She cleans up and is actually a pink hue with a snow white mane!

Faerie gaits in that way that only Kentucky Mountain Horses can, and has been adopted for career as an exhibition horse for Victorian-era sidesaddle work as well as being the preferred mount of a local Baroness! (no foolin'!)

Faerie flirts with Don Juan (recently adopted to live and work in Malibu, CA., the lucky stiff...)

Hey Faerie, Are you PINK?

BABY RAY -Horse #00006 Status: ADOPTED!

Baby Ray came to us in July of '07 from a farm that was rapidly being overgrazed due to many horses, few acres of pasture, and no rain. This is a recipe for catastrophe, but the owners saw the trouble brewing and contacted us to take several of their Kentucky Mountain Horses. Baby Ray was about a 7 year old gelding at the time of his arrival. A bit quirky under saddle, and carrying the psychological baggage so often found in horses that come from formerly difficult circumstances, he spent much of the fall just hanging out with the herd. Winter of '08 saw him back under saddle in light work, and (happy, happy, joy, joy!) he was adopted at the end of January, '08. Typical of Kentucky Mountain Horses, he has the distinctive 5 beat gait that makes them SUPERB riding horses for anyone who wants a smooth, easy, luxurious ride. He is very loving and friendly, and ready to go.

ADOPTED! , We wish him happiness in his new home!

RUBY SLIPPERS -Horse #00005 STATUS: ADOPTED!

Ruby Slippers came with Baby Ray in July of '07. She was about 4 years old at the time of her arrival, and is an exceptionally beautiful example of a Kentucky Mountain Horse. Long legs, very exotic eye detail and bone structure in her face, ginger mane and a disposition that Mary Poppins would be proud of! Her story is the same as Baby Ray's, given over from a overcrowded farm with not enough pasture. She is an extremely intelligent mare, and very patient. She gaits in a world class style naturally, and would show very well if not for her 'common' color. (No color is 'common' to us! She's absolutely breathtaking.) She would make a perfect pleasure and trail horse, and would do well as a horse for a novice as well as an older rider, she's just that good. Issues with bridles and bits has led us to steer her into handling under a bitless bridle. Consideration could be given to setting her up as a foundation mare for a breeding program if the right stallion could be paired with her. Oh my.... Ruby Slippers was featured on the FRONT PAGE of the Los Angeles Times on January 13th, 2008!

UPDATE: Ruby Slippers was adopted on May Day! by Claire! She is in Maysville, KY. being trained into her new career with a family. She is also being enrolled in a breeding program as a satellite foundation mare for The Buckland Estate.

UPDATE: 'RUBY SLIPPERS' BECOMES 'BRENNA' -named for a Scandinavian goddess of fire!

Both Horse and Master are a fiery pair. Clare May of Maysville is shown here will her Buckland adopted Kentucky Mountain Horse, 'Brenna', participating with the Buffalo Trace Mounted Patrol at the 2008 Balloon Festival. Brenna is so serene with her surroundings that she stood and watched a helicopter landing only about 50 yards away! She is also shown with her father who rides a rescued former-Grand Canyon Trail Mule.

DON JUAN -Horse #00002 STATUS: ADOPTED!

Don Juan was saved in our first meeting with the 'kill buyer'. This guy lurks around auctions trying to scoop up that unfortunate horse that no one seems to want for a 'killer price'. This is the horse that goes to Mexico to die in the most horrific ways possible. We thought he was an old, broken down horse, but he turned out to be just about 2 years old, and had been underfed most of his life. A young Saddlebred gelding, Don Juan will never be a great big horse, his growth pretty stunted by the lack of nutrition in his early months of life. He will fill out a bit more, and will be a terrific riding horse for a teenager or a lady. However, you want to talk about style! He prances when he gets out and the tail is held up very high over his hindquarters. Miss Buffy named him 'Don Juan' because of the affection this boy has for anyone who is kind to him. Very inquisitive, very trusting, very tactile; Don Juan loves to be groomed and will stand all day if you let him under the brush and comb. He has grown out very well during his stay with us, and is green broke. Miss Buffy has had the saddle on his back and been up in it, although they haven't gone 'walk-a-bout' yet. He will walk on and off a trailer like a champ and is ready to for training to saddle. This is another great horse ready for his new career! Miss Buffy will cry the day he leaves for a new life, but they will also be tears of joy.

March '08 update: Don Juan has been adopted, and is going to MALIBU, CA! And yes, Miss Buffy cried. He will be shipping with Major, another BERI rescue, to begin new careers as pleasure horses in the celebrity-laden lands west of Hollywood. Thank you for gracing us Don Juan, and may your new career be filled with love and wonder.

May '08 update: Don Juan has gone to Malibu, and has taken up residence at White Cloud Ranch, where it's alfalfa and water-on-demand for life! Yippee! Don Juan was adopted by Cynthia M.

Don Juan with his new halter and (below) at preload with Mr. Chris. Faerie Queen looks on to say farewell. Don Juan wants to know when Horse Day is at Disneyland!
