Week ONE at BERI
Week ONE. This is STAR. She is a 9 year old Percheron mare referred to us after she was recovered from a boarding facility in Tennessee. Nearly 700 to 1000 lbs underweight, the circumstances that led to this situation are under review. It will be a long road back, IF she survives. Her rectal area has receded into her body a good 6-8 inches, which means her body is consuming itself trying to survive. This doesn't bode well for recovery.

Week EIGHT at BERI!

Week EIGHT. Star is looking much better. The parasites are now under control, and the heavy Rice Bran diet during weeks TWO through SIX has really begun to show. Still, slow and steady is the course, and now we feed her grain and bran on an "on demand" schedule. Now that the grass is fully in and lush on the pastures, the horses hardly come down to the barn for feeding. Star appears every few mornings or evenings solo at the barn, a social thing, but also because her body is demanding something for her diet she can't get off the pasture and mineral blocks. When she comes in, we feed her a good, rounded diet of 50/50 13% feed and Rice Bran. She has responded very well, and we have good hopes that she will now fully recover.
